Q: What are pros and cons of buying a VW?
In general? And yes I already know parts are expensive.
If I must be specific a used Golf, Jetta or Passat. I don't like bugs, to low and tiny. And a Cabby is a no go, I don't want a convertible.
I'd like a new Rabbit or GTI but fat chance!! Haha!
A: Pro:
1. Build quality, and good interior design. The cabin in a nice place to be in.
2. Good drivetrains: the engines are reliable if correctly serviced, and fuel economy is good, especially if your driving style is sensible.
3. Resale is pretty good for most models, and either of the three you mention specifically will continue on for a long time if looked after.
4. The core design is superior to most cars in the same class, and certainly is better than US and lesser European makes or the Koreans. Toyota and other Jap barands offer similar design quality and the reliability is great, but they lack the style.
5. Insurance is easy on any of the three you suggest.
6. Safety is first rate, as is handling.
7. You don't have the additional headaches of owning a Benz, BMW or Audi (A VW group brand anyway), such as badge envy and even higher service costs and depreciation.
CONS.
1. The first is one you know: cost of parts. ALSO, there is another factor: parts availability. A Toyota part can be sourced today. A VW part might need a few days to source. This is an issue if the car cannot be driven in the meantime.
2. Envy: Euro cars tend to get more notice and I have had issues with mine (not in Europe, but in the US and a bit less in Australia where I now am), with petty vandalism from what I can UAW morons. Mind you, I did live in Michigan for a bit, but the fault is still theirs.
3. Resale. The car must be kept in top condition to acheive good resale. This can prove time consuming and even expensive, especially if the car is black because washing swirls show up in the clear coat and need to be removed regularly.
Most of my cons are subjective. I have owned Passats and Golfs of various models and am awaiting a Passat CC. Currently I drive an Audi A6 V6 Supercharged. Brilliant, but I am glad it is on a short lease: the depreciation is a killer. Overall it offers few advantages over the Passat, unless one counts the badge.
Go for it, and enjoy.
Q: How HP do i have under my hood?
i have a 2007 VW Rabbit, when i bought it a month it was set at stock 150 HP, until now i have added a $700 Greddy Exhaust System, and a $120 GBOX Performance mudule chip, im guessing i have all together about 175 HP because the chip says it adds 11 HP and the Exhast should add about 8-12 HP, how much you guys think these two parts have added?
A: your estimate sounds about right, but i would say around 170, but you can get it dynoed to get the exact amount
Q: how can i make my car go faster?
I have a 2007 VW Rabbit and im trying to add mods to it to make it go faster but there are no parts out for it yet since its a 2007, so is there anyway or anyplace online someone can help me find parts for cars that have just been released, i have added a greddy exhaust already and a chip but the chip didnt really work, is there anything else i can add?
A: A Hydrogen fuel injected rocket and then floor it!
Q: vw cabriolet question?
I have an 89 cabriolet, would like to repair a few thing, mostly cosmetic. Are any parts interchangable? would Rabbit or Golf parts fit on a cabriolete? I just got it 2 days ago, can't find this on the internet.
A: Probably a lot of it :)
Q: Bosch/Motorola alternator?
I need an alternator for a 1983 VW Rabbit. Can I use both Bosch or Motorola? The old alternator is a Bosch but online parts stores sell Motorolas as a replacement.
A: the brand of an alternator doesn't make any difference. however there are other specs of your alternator that need to be taken into account when finding a replacement. try to match the original as close as possible. but if it says that it is a replacement they have probaly already checked it out. it is just a matter of how much you want to spend.
Q: 1990 golf/gti project?
i have a 1990 golf that i want to make "my own". im looking for a front end that has those round headlights. know where i can find those? also, what are some good sites to buy older vw parts. also, engine upgrades? short shifter? what is the best place to look for these?
i just posted this but i have another question. can someone explain the difference between a golf, gti, and a rabbit? also, what mark 1, 2, 3... is all about. i have a 90' golf so what mark would that be? would it be a mark? I am BRAND NEW to the euro world so sorry for the stupidity. but thanks for the patience.
forget the question about the engine. id have to go check what it is. i just got this thing for CHEAP and i havent even opened up the hood.
A: You have a mk2. The round headlights come on cabriolets and some other golfs. You can look around for junk yards or you can look online. Just search "round headlights mk2 golf" and you'll find tons, even on ebay. You have to change the radiator support though to change the headlight shape.
A rabbit is just a mk1 or mk5 golf. They changed the name for those years. A mk1 golf is from 1974-1983, mk 2 is from 1983-1992, and mk3 is from 1992-1999.
You can look on mjmautohaus.com for good parts. I wouldn't suggest getting a shortshifter but that's your choice. If you're looking for a lot of speed you can do a 2.0 or vr6 swap in it. The engines they come with are really slow. I'd suggest doing a 2.0 swap (it's easier and cheaper than a vr) and either putting a turbo or supercharger on it, porting and polishing the intake manifold, getting an exhaust, a chip and lowering it.
