Q: how slow or fast is a 1.9 105 bhp vw passat 2006 diesel?
ive been told its to slow but does anyone know how fast it is a hold long it takes to get to top speed and are they reliable
A: Every car is slow(when compared to a nitro fueld supercharged 2000HP dragster-does 0 to 900 in 3 seconds(let me catch my breath). But I blinked my eye lid 29 times during that space of time..
Even a tortise is fast when compared to a snail.
So, what do you need? A Test drive always works. .And you don't want to get to top speed( for you would be speeding on any US highway)..
So again, what do you need?
Are they reliable? How is 700thousand miles on the same motor until the body rusts away? You will be 6 feet under.
Q: i have a vw passat 04/05 and want to run on 100% bio diesel, is this possible, if so how ??
A: 100% bio is fine
but 100% veggie oil most definitely isnt
Q: VW Passat Oil?
Hi All
I have a VW Passat 1.9 TDI 2002, recently I noticed around the end of the engin e cover there was oil, not much just if you run a tissue around the edge of the cover it picks up the oil.
When I had my service 2 weeks ago, I mentioned it and he said its normal for a VW Diesel, as its the breather valves under the cover, nothing to worry about?
I am still unsure, again today ive checked my oil and its there again. Is this safe, as naturally my concerns is oil getting on the timing belt, even though thats under a seperate cover so not sure if this is even possible.
Can you please advise, if anyone else has this issue, as above its not loads of oil and the oil level has not gone down, its like you have dirty hands from touching oil and then have touched around the cover.
THanks
Steve
Thanks for below reply, if it does not cause any damage then will leave as it is, many thanks
A: Hi most diesels "weep" a little oil from the breather or around the rocker cover .
If it does bother you just renew the breather pipe and clips and rocker cover gasket and it will be fine for around 10.000 miles then it will do it again .
Hope this helps
Q: VW Passat Emissions Light?
The emissions light has come on on my 2 yr old passat diesel 1.9 only i think its a computer fault... is there any way to check?
A: To find out what is wrong will take a diagnostics scan.
Your car is still under warranty isn't it?
Q: my 99 vw passat makes a whirring noise on full lock either right or left side what could be the cause of this?
also if i was selling my car how much should i ask its 110bhp i.9 diesel with 158;000 miles on clock and running like new in very good nick and its a glittering black
A: Could be wear in the power steering, but check the fluid level and top up if rquired.
Q: just bought a new VW passat, and was told they need 1 litre of oil every 6000miles?
I cant believe this, i havnt had a car in 20 years that burnt oil, no reason will cinvince me this is acceptable, after 3000m the oil light came on and VW said this is ok and i should carry 10L in the boot, as spare. can someone explain? at £16 a litre i will be spending more on oil than diesel???????????????
A: Since your whole sump holds less than 5 litres you have no need to carry 10 litres .On a new engine the figure of 1 litre per 6000 miles is correct. It will improve as your engine beds in you should check your oil once a week that way round you do not get warning lights on.Incidentally the oil warning light measures pressure not volume that's why you need to check the dip stick. At 16 quid a litre you were robbed.
Q: 2007 Jetta vs. Passat.....Jetta Diesel?
Thinking about buying a VW. Safety rating is a plus, since I commute the crazy roads of Atlanta everyday. How do you like your VW? VW Diesel worth thinking about buying? Is the turbo version worth the buy? Thank you in advance for your input
A: VWs are great cars to own. I've owned them since my first 1979 VW Scirocco.
VWs are one of the safest cars on the road as rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IHS), which is more stringent than the government test.
VW Diesel engines are awesome. Great amounts of torque which means quick acceleration. You don't have to worry about cold weather starts as VW has the best diesel technology and they have eliminated all the issues of old diesel engines. Noise is minimal and while driving you cannot tell you are driving a diesel. You cannot smell the exhaust thus cannot tell it is a diesel. In other words, they are great engines.
If you are going to drive very high miles, then diesels are worth the investment because a VW diesel engine can last you upwards of 200,000 miles. If you are driving average miles (12-15k miles/year) then a turbo gas engine is better. VWs 2.0T engine is absolutely amazing (I own one car with that engine and am very happy) with great gas mileage
Good luck with your decision. You cannot go wrong with either choice
Q: What you think of VW Passat as a family car?
Need to replace my Commodore with another family car that is cheap to run and does good mileage per liter of fuel. I am currently looking at Passat and tossing between Diesel and Petrol and not sure if it cjeap to maintain or not. My previous Alfa Romeo was expensive.
A: The TDI diesel is absolutely the superior choice.
I can't imagine anyone outside of the United States especially, would consider the petrol engine instead.
What on earth for? So you can have a spark ignition system to maintain? So you can get half the fuel economy? So you can have an engine that will last about half as long?
With what you pay for petrol overseas, it's an easy decision. Diesels hold their resale value better because people KNOW they last. Diesels have more driveable torque and deliver their power at low RPM's where you can put it to better use. Better durability, longevitiy and vastly better fuel economy. Modern direct injection diesels like the TDI Passat are scarcely louder than petrol engines, especially at highway speeds!
The diesel requires NO spark plugs or plug wires or any kind of ignition system maintainence of any type. The glow plugs will last at least 100,000 miles. The maintance will be cheaper, filling it with fuel will be cheaper. It's an easy decision made even easier if you test drive an excellent TDI motor and see how well it drives.
I only wish we had more diesel choices here in the United States instead of the thirsty V6 petrol motors that rarely feel as powerful as advertised and the wimpish petrol 4 cylinders that either have no torque or drink fuel like crazy.
Q: What type of VW passat and jetta models do you recommend?
i have heard the good and the bad about vw, i love the way they look and i hear they drive great. but which model of the jetta and passat are ones less likly to give me problem but are still fun to drive... im leaning to the 1.8 turbo or the diesel injected. Please help me out. this is gonna be my first car. much appreaciated

oh and by the way im looking at a 1996 passat 64k miles, and passat's and jettas 95-2000.. usually close to or over 100,000k miles
A: I would look for the Jetta Wagon, 2002-2005. The 1.8T engine is strong and reasonably durable, as long as you keep up with the timing belt/water pump change. I have the 2003 Jetta GLS wagon with 1.8T and 5-speed. Very fun to drive and decent ~30mpg on gas. As long as I keep my foot out of the turbo, that is ;-) The versatility of the wagon body is a plus, too.
Q: hi everyone, i have a problem with my car,its a vw passat diesel?
when its in neutral while engine running, the whole car shakes.when u drive it goes bit worse but if u drive giving half clutch it`s bit more normal what couldbe wrong?thanks
A: i think your motor mount( in front on the bottom between radiator and engine) is bad. time to change. it can be hitting something!
Q: vw passat..........?
i need the diesel gauge fixing on my car (vw passat) dont have a clue where to go as a normal garage wont fix it, they say its an electrical problem. (seems stupid to me. they are a garage!)
i live in coventry, help please...thanx
ive tried doing it myself but dont know whee to start.
car electrician.....any one know any numbers? or addresses in coventry area in united kingdom?
im a complete novice myself.
A: you can do this.
first disconnect the plug at the top of the fuel tank.turn the key on and your reading on the Gage should go to either way past full or way past empty(not sure which on v.w.but definitely one one the other).then place a jumper wire between the two contacts in the plug for the sending unit .now the Gage should go to the opposite reading as before .if so the Gage is fine replace the sending unit ,if not most likely the Gage in the dash.most likely it is the sending unit though they have about a 10x failure rate compared to gages.if i can be of further assistance please feel free to e-mail.
Q: how easy is it to fit glow plugs to a vw passat '96 1.9 diesel?
A: depends if they are seized...
Q: 1999 VW Passat Model?
My parents are taking me to look at a 1999 passat and all the guy told them was that it was a 1.9 turbo and I think that's a diesel and so I tried looking up picture of it and all that came up was the wagon style... is that the only model the 1.9 turbo came in?
A: No it also comes in saloon style, and yes you are right it is a diesel, they are VERY reliable cars and they are also not bad on performance and comfort.
That year they come in the 90bhp, 110bhp and 115bhp
Q: why is the VW TDI not considered a green car?
Why do the "green" people who make all the lists about the most "green" cars not mention Volkswagen's diesel engines? I own a Passat TDI and I get about 50MPG. Yet i never see anyone talking about the fact that VW has some of the most efficient cars on the market.. And they will outperform any Toyota or Honda hybrid (acceleration and handling) and last a lot longer because the TDI engine is nothing short of bullet proof. At the VW dealer I go to they have plaques with odometers and they are all over 1 million kilometers. Any ideas???
By the way, many car companies now have plans to offer small diesel engines like VW.
A: "However this engine emits enormous amounts of particulates, and NOx. Significantly more so than a gasser that gets half the mileage"
Care to quantify what "significantly" means, especially in terms of the NOx? NOx is a family of gases. The specific NOx emissions from a gas vehicle is different diesels. Some recent studies have even concluded that the NOx from diesel emissions do not contribute to smog formation because the actual component is different. Further, is it right to ignore in the gas engine the invisible particulates (far worse because your lungs can't filter them!) and significantly greater toxic emissions components like CO and benzine? The truth is that emissions of modern diesels are just different, not necessarily worse. But the perception is that they are dirty because you can see the particulates. That too by the way has been significantly reduced now that Ultra Low Sulpher diesel (< 15ppm) is mandated here in the US (Europe has had it for years)
It will all be moot in '08 anyway when all vehicles will have to meet the same regulations. '08 and later diesels will have particulate filters and NOx scrubbers (akin to catalytic converters).
And yes, the TDI engine is bulletproof (it's the rest of the car that aren't always as reliable).
Oh, and one word: biodiesel.

Q: i,m driving a 2000 vw passat?

A: I´m sure not.
