Q: I am planning on buying a used 2008 passat Turbo, any suggestions?
2008 VW passat 4 door, FWD, Sedan, AUTO, 2.0L I4 with 20,482 miles. They are asking $14,900. I am trading my 2006 Scion Tc with 32000 miles for it. I need a bigger car but I am a little worried about buying a used car. Can someone tell me more about the Passat. Any problems ect.
A: vw s are bullet proof and reliable its only a year old . get it serviced an its like new
Q: Safe air in VW-Passat cabin? ?
I have a Benzin like smell in 2001, 100,000 miles VW-Passat when using the heat........
When I used the heating (not w. A/C) I tend to get weary eyes and a headache during the next few hours after using the car. I feel kind of drowsy, not in my 5 senses!!! I have taken it to the shop several times: they changed the cabin filter; when they did the timing belt 5000 miles ago they repaired a hose that whas leaking a little bit of oil an was causing some smell; worked on "some Ventury" that was clogged, washed the engine, etc. Things have improved and the smell is far, far less, but I still get hedachs. I also get like a metallic taste in my mouth after few minutes of sitting in the car.
Went to VW dealr and without even cheking the car suggested to change the Heater-coil (?) for $ 1,800. Hate to do this if this is not the cause. The car according to Kelly-Blue-Book is worth probable less than $ 5k. I already put in about $ 1,5k. Now is the poitn to deside to either put mor money in or replace.
Any thoughts/ideas or help suggested?
Thks. Itropse.
Thanks. Apprecaite any input to this. Regards, Itropse.
A: I think it is time to replace the car. Trade it in for a new pasaat if you liked this one. I have the new 2008 pasaat and LOVE it. It really isn't worth putting in a total of $3,300 if the car is worth under $5000.
Q: The keyless entry, power windows and interior lights on my 2003 VW passat have ceased to work?
when it started, the problem used to come intermittently, but now they just dont work at all anymore. the power windows, the interior lights and the remote entry dont respond anymore. what could be the problem?
A: jasante2, I bought a used Passat in Indiana last week and saved some cash. I haven't had any problems yet. I'll never buy a new car. http://www.findusedcardealer.com
Q: Is there a fuse that can be removed on a VW Passat to stop the odometer?
Looking at buying a used 2006 model, but the mileage is suspiciously low.
A: What mileage does it have that you consider it "suspiciously low"?
If you're buying from a dealer, a three model-year old car is likely to have been an off-lease vehicle, in which case the annual lease mileage would have been limited.
If you suspect odometer fraud, your best bet is to run a title check before proceeding in order to see what the mileage was at the time of each sale.
You could also try to take the car to a mechanic who specializes in repairing odometers, to see if it has been tampered with.
Odometer fraud is illegal, look for your state and local laws to see what restitution you would be entitled to in a case of odometer fraud.
Q: Which aerial will fit my 1997 VW Passat?
When I bought my 1997 VW Passat (SE 20V 1.8L Saloon) it was missing the 'whip' part of the aerial (that screws into the port on top of the roof).
The part from the VW dealer seems expensive, but I cannot find enough information online to know whether cheaper alternatives will fit my car or not (I know that Renault Megane aerials have a different screw thread size, at least!).
Does anyone know if VW Passat have always used a standard size, or how I can tell which will fit before I buy them?
Thanks!
A: all vw screw ariels should fit ok..
Q: VW Passat Brake Failure?
I have a 2000 VW Passat which i purchased used from a dealer two months ago. The first thing to go wrong with it was that my indicators stopped working. That has since resolved itself. Now my ABS, BRAKE, ASR/EDL light have been coming on along with a loud beeping and my driver console telling me to STOP! and that there's been a brake failure.
My car is running just fine. What's going on?
A: I have a 1999 Passat and the same thing happened to me. I'm a mechanic, and VW released a "Technical Service Bulletin" saying that this happens, I had to open up the dash and fiddle around with the wire connections, and I fixed it. The Tac doesn't work either in most.
You can still drive your car just remember when the lights blink, your
traction control (ASR) and anti-lock brakes(ABS) DO NOT work, so drive carefully until you get it repaired.
Q: what kind of spark plugs should I use for my 2001 vw passat 1.8?
A: get the new E3 spark plugs they give you a liitle bit more horse power like 5 at the most and saves you some gas in the long run
Q: Benzin like smell in 2001 VW-Passat: has anyone had similar situation when using heat? ?
2001 Wagon VW-Passat; 100,000 miles.
My car is in top shape except regarding the smell.
Any ideas or help suggested? Any contact directly @ VW?
Thanks. Apprecaite any input to this. Regards, Itropse.
A: While the suggestion sound stupid, it ain't. Do you fill your car up to the brim with fuel when you fill'er up? If you do, that is the most likeliest place where the smell is coming from. The filler neck has an overflow/vent tube, and any gas overflowing say like when you accellerate - it spews out the excess that hits against the fuel cap and then runs onto the ground. This is there for as you use fuel, something has to replace the missing fuel because otherwise there would be a vacuum and you would not get anymore. So air goes in thru the vent tube to replace the missing gas.
Don't fill it up so full is the easiest fix. Benzin being a little oily takes a little while to dissappear but you will notice an improvement. Meanwhile, drive with the drivers window open a 1/2-1/4" all the time to ventilate the car and introduce fresh air in. It takes a while for that smell to disappear.(even longer when you keep the car closed up tight) Air it out as much as possible. I realize the air is a bit brisk at -20 C so having the window open fully is not in the cards.....but having it open a bit is better than closed up tight.
Q: My VW is smoking out the tailpipe on take-off. It has no odor, and the oil & coolant are ok. Any tips/advice?
I just bought a used VW Passat, and today it started puffing whitish smoke out of the tailpipe on take-off. I had this happen to me in my old Neon, but it did it all the time, it burned oil bad, and overheated regularly. The VW doesn't do it all the time, and the temperature is staying in the normal range. The oil isn't milky, the coolant looks fine, there is nothing dripping out of the tailpipe, and there is no odor, other than the regular smell of exhaust fumes. The car had been sitting for a while before I bought it, and it idles slightly rough. Could it be a head gasket problem? Or is the car just burning out all of the crap built up from sitting for such a long time? Any insight would be great.....I am at a loss on this one.
A: You possibly answered your own question. It very well could just need to be driven (build up). You also state the engine is idling rough. This could be a potential cause too. Have you changed your ignition components (plugs, wires, cap, and rotor)? Add a bottle of Lucas Fuel Treatment to the gas tank and run it out.
As far as possible problems...two come to mind. The first is the catalytic converter(s). If they are old and degraded you'll get more smoke out of the tail pipe than normal. No big deal and I wouldn't worry about it unless you can't pass an emissions inspection. The second option are your valve seals. Since the car sat for a long time they may be old and hard. Bad valve seals will typically smoke when you first start the car and it will stop smoking after the engine has warmed to operating temperature. Not much you can do about this either without spending a load of cash. Try a bottle of Lucas Engine Oil Treatment on your next oil change.
(Yes, I'm a Lucas additives fan. I don't normally recommend additives - most of them suck. However, I like Lucas' products and have had them work well in the past. They also make a transmission treatment.)
And finally, I'm assuming there are no other apparent problems with your vehicle such as a check engine light on?
Q: Smoking VW Passat Sport 2.0TDI?
I have a new model VW Passat Sport 2.0 TDI. Ever since it was new it has smoked when the engine is under load. Obviously the diesel produces a cetain amouint of smoke but in particular the Sport model seems to produce an excessive amount. The company I work for also got several SE models at the same time and these don't seem to be effected. I have noticed other Sport models have the same problem when I follow them. It's difficult to see your own car doing it because of the rear tinted windows darkening everything anyway. Earlier this wek the car went back to VW and had the latest fuel mapping upgrade, its now better but not acceptable. The only option on the car that may have any link is I chose cruise control, which the SE has as standard, but has to be added to the fuel mapping on this model. It has covered 37,000 miles with full VW history, and uses no oil. Does anyone or any VAG service technicians have any idea why this model does this or how to correct it please ?
This car spends its entire life on the motorway, 37,000 miles in 10 months (had it last christmas) means its always being used so it can't be because it clogs up around town all the time. A full VW service history also means the oil is changed on a regular basis. Maybe the Sport model doesn't have somesort of filter or something that the other models in the range do have. There is definately something about the Sport model that doesn't seem to effect the other VW's with the same engine, although I have noticed it on some Audi A4 with 2.0TDI same engine. There must be differences somewhere within the exhaust, filter or fuel mapping somewhere.
Despite what VW tells you I am convinced there is a difference somewhere, probably either in the fuel mapping or fuel filtering, exhaust etc. We had four new SE Passats earlier this year and two of them have had to be recalled for re-mapping, despite them all being delivered on the same day, sequential numbers etc - so they can be and are different but local VW dealer cannot or won't say why/what etc, simply two had to be recalled and the other two were ok.
A: as far as i am aware there have not been any problems with this model if it has already had the re-map.The cruise should not make any difference to this either or the filtration/exhaust systems which are standard throughout the entire range. The only problem i have come across smoking wise has been with the v6 model and this is due to the engine breathers filter being blocked but i consider this unlikely considering the milage and service history of the car.hope this is of some help
Q: Engine Oil for VW Passat 2.0?
What sort of oil should I use for my 2.0 VW Passat Estate Y reg. When I looked in the garage the other day there was two types, and im not into anything mechanical. One was 10w ..... something something? which I dont understand?
A: Here is the Audi VW Technical Bulletin with all the Oils they recommend.
http://www.vaglinks.com/Docs/Misc/Audi_VW502-00_VW505%2001_OilQualityStandards.pdf
Is 5W40 or 0W40 and Synthetic. The choice of brand is up to you. Follow the guide for brands. Read your Owner's Manual for capacities and the specs. Should be 502 or 505, look in the book to make sure.
Good luck !
Q: VW Passat Wagon - nice car?
I only buy used vehicles. One of my favorites is the BMW 5 series Touring Wagons but I would like better mileage and lower repair bills.
Honda and Toyota have dropped out of the market.
I think Jetta had a wagon. I thought there was a diesel. These options seem very hard to find in $6000 used wagons.
That leaves products like the VW Passat. Here's an example;

I would appreciate feedback from Passat owners.
A: NOT A OWNER BUY DO REPAIR THEM.
1. VERY EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR.
2. A LOT OF THE PARTS CAN ONLY BE BOUGHT FROM THE DEALER.
Q: VW Passat fault code: Altitude Adaptation - Signal out of tolerance?
I got this fault code in an year 2000 B5 Passat. 18001 - Altitude Adaptation: Signal Out of Tolerance - P1593 - 35-00
using vag-com software.
Does anyone know what this is or where it is related to.
There's an engine miss-fire in the car around 4500rpm. Could these be connected?
SOS
A: The altitude adaptation is used to control the fuel air mix to the fuel injectors. A car at altitude will use a much leaner mix then a car a sea level, this is as a result of the reduced O2 levels in the atmosphere.
If the signal is out of tolerance, it either means that there is an issue with the program for the ECU or more probably some body has fitted a "Performance Chip" probably from eBay. These little things send a false signal to the ECU resulting in it over fuelling.
Have a look around the wiring for a DIY fix, the unit is not very small but will be fairly easy to find as it sits attached to the cables for no apparent reason.
Ja.

Q: 01" VW Passat won't start after new alt & bttry replacement, I have activation code, but dnt knw how?
Just replaced the alternator my car, after reconnecting the battery I get power but it will not start. According the the repair manual it is the anit-theft mode and requires the activation code to be input thru the stock radio. I replaced the radio, but still have it I think, do I need to have the original deck that it came with? Is there some number besides a dealer I can call? We bought the car used for our daughter and after a $400 replacement key experience would perfer not to go to a dealer. Any manual that might help me?
A: the no start condition has nothing to do with the radio. here is how you tell if it's an immobilzer issue causing your problem. turn the ign key on to run position, but dont try to start it. look at all of the lights that are lit up on the dash. is there a flashing immobilizer light on? this looks like an outline of a car with a key in the center of it. if yes, the ign keys will have to be reprogrammed. if no, it's not an immobilizer issue causing a no start. try another key to the car, and see if it will start with that one. once in a great while the immobilizer will lose memory. doesnt happen often. you will have to tow it to a vw dealer. no none else has the equipment to fix it. an audi dealer comes close, but not the right software. remember, there is no code to put into the radio to make the car start. that code is for the radio unlock feature, to make the radio play again.
