Q: Which number fuse is for the brake lights on a 2004 VW Passat?
All 3 of my brake lights quit working, so I'm hoping it's just a fuse but the card that says which fuse is which, only has pictures. Very confusing. I do not have an owners manual.

A: It's F13 10 amp if thats ok then it will be the brake light switch which is up behind the pedal. To test it make sure it is properly situated if so then unplug it and bridge the plug connections with a piece of wire with the ignition on and the lights will come on.

Q: My 2004 VW Passat window is sticking, what can I do ?
The window is making a noise so there is power there. I reckon there may be a stone in there possibly as It made a grinding sound for a few month before it stuck. My real question is, how do I get the door apart to check this?

A: your cable inside the door is broken. look on the door edge next to the door check, take off the grommet and loosen the torx screw (it doesent come right out) remove the door card then the large tin cover that holds the window mechanisim take out the door lock, loosen the two nuts under the big black grommets they hold the drop glass, take out where you would usualy put the key and you will see a small cable pop it out give the whole thing a bit of a wriggle and out it comes,, swap over cable system and use the same motor. put it all back the way you took it off. and bobs your uncle.. i can do it in 30 mins

Q: I have a 2004 VW Passat 1.8T. Is there any way I can twin turbo it? Any kits out there?

A: if you twin turboed your INLINE 4 cylinder the lag would be so great that you would NEVER see full boost until about 6,000 rpm's and you would really lose any torque that you already have. Twin turbos are a great setup on a motor in the "v" configuration due to having 2 heads to pull from. An inline car would rely on the only head to get both turbos spinning and boosting. Your best bet is to get a turbo upgrade and a ECU reflash from ABD racing. The reflash alone on your car will net you about 45-50 wheel hp. A little larger turbo will add another 30-40 wheel hp at the stock/reflashed boost levels.

Q: I have a VW 2004 Passat. A snowflake popped up next to the tempeture reading and started dinging. What is it?

A: As the past owner of a VW Passat, I can report to you that it means the temperature is close enough to freezing that you need to be cautious about slippery driving conditions. Here is more from a VW enthusiast website (listed below): All VW products will display a snowflake symbol in the instrument cluster whenever the outside air temperature is 4° C (about 40° F) or less. If the outside air temperature drops from greater than 4° C to 4° C while the car is being driven, the first appearance of the snowflake will be accompanied by a 'bong' sound that is generated by the small speaker in the back of the instrument cluster. The snowflake symbol is intended to remind the driver that the outside temperature is now in the range where ice can form on the road.

Q: how to fix my 2004 passat's leather on door?
HI, fellas! Well i have this 2004 passat, and it has loose leather on drivers side, i have noticed to many vw, not only passat's, that the leather or cloth above the arm rest is loose. By loose i mean that it does not keep it's shape it is not tight to the door. Maybe some one of you have had this problem, or maybe you know how to fix it! Cheers. i definitely want to do it myself

A: I'm not quite sure if it would be possible to remove the leather and get it to stick back on properly without it looking bad. That's the only way I can think of to do it, though. Or you could find a totally new door panel on Ebay or at a junk yard that still has the leather in tact and just replace the whole panel. I know this can be done at home. I once had to take the door panel off my old Bimmer to fix the handle. It was kind of a pain in the arse to get it back on, but I did it! lol Good luck!

Q: A VW Passat...?
what size engines do they come in?...and how much HP do they have?? if i get like an 2004 Passat and I upgrade the engine and suspension...is there annyway it will out perform the 2006 dodge charger R/T? and if I do upgrade the engine what are suggestions for upgrades and how much more HP will that give it???

A: a 97 to 2005 will come with a 1.8L turbocharged engine, a 2.8L V6 or the 4.0L W8. a 97-2001.5 1.8T will have about 150 hp stock and the v6 model has about 175 or so. the 2002-2005 1.8T should be around 170 hp and the v6 is between 190-200. the w8 has 270 hp. to put power to the ground, youre going to want 4motion on whichever. the passat is a heavier car and i honestly dont think you will ever mod a passat to beat a charger r/t. doesnt mean you cant try. for the 1.8T- big turbo (gt28rs, gt2871r, etc.) and proper software, turbo-back exhaust, FMIC, gasket matching, injectors, add custom heat shielding to intake, and so on. with all this properly tuned, you could get 250-300 hp. this costs a LOT and you will need a coilover suspension kit to control the power. for the v6- g2 supercharger by PES and software, injectors, exhaust. you could also fabricate a twin turbo design (its been done) and all of the things that go along w/ it. again, lot of money. the w8 is probably your best bet. there are chips available that raise the governor. these cars are somewhat rare, but are getting cheaper due to gas prices. if you really have your heart set on beating a charger with a german car, id say get an audi s4. loads of power and a better overall vehicle. price is going to be the only limiting factor in all of these. good luck

Q: How much would it cost to repace my rear break pads?
I drive a 2004 VW Passat. The routers look ok to me, but they might not be able to cut them.

A: Depends where you go as to what price you will be charged. Dealership will be by far the most expensive but check anyway. Sometimes they do a pad and rotor turn for $99 or so just to keep individuals attracted to them. I checked Rockauto.com and they came back with the following: Pads: Wagner, rear MX340 $28.79 set Rotors: Raybestos $18.14 each Now these were for the parts only (and would be shipped to your house and you would have to find a mechanic and pay labor....) and for the Passat 2.0L engine...don't know if you have the 1.8L supercharged or the 1.9 diesel which may effect the part number, type and cost. These are entry level parts but a reputable name brand and will do just fine. Expect, if the rotors only need turned to be charged $5 to 8 dollars per rotor and 1 to 1.5 hour(s) of labor ($45 to $60 per hour) to change out pads, turn rotors and road test. Almost always they say that they can't be turned...verify that by having the mechanic stand in front of you and measure them and explain the dial caliper reading that he/she is taking and why if you choose to have them turned. Compare that to the minimum rotor thickness that the dealer says the rotor can be. A good mechanic has NO issue showing you and explaining to you the ins and outs and the why behind what they are doing. If you are near the, usually a few thousands of an inch, minimum thickness... then just replace them. I wholeheartedly recommend that you just trash the old ones and buy the new ones...$20 to $25 is nothing for each rotor...If you buy them yourself they are very inexpensive..about 3 starbucks frap's each....Pretty cheap insurance for your safety! You will be charged much more for parts if you buy them at the shop that does your brakes....expect to pay between $70 and $120 per rotor and 30 to 50% more for the pads. Best to buy your own parts and take them to a reputable mechanic....Then there is NO chance that they will kill your wallet on markup costs on the parts. Don't let them tell you that they won't warranty the work if you bring your own parts....that is malarky! Leave and go somewhere else if they say that. If you need the parts sooner check with your local parts store...like Autozone etc and purchase there. Usually same day instock or next day they will have them for you. You can put you information in online( your zipcode, year make model and engine size) at Autozone.com and select brakes, then rotors, then pads and see if they are in stock as well as the cost at your store. Hope that helps....oh BTW make certain that whoever does your brakes is ASE certified master mechanic or they have at the bare minimum their ASE Brake cert and several years of experience AND a master mechanic checking their work.

Q: Warning on VW Passat?
Car is a 2004 Volkswagon Passat 2 litre SE model. Car is telling me to STOP and check coolant level and is overheating? Have checked the coolant level and all looks fine. Anyone got any ideas what can be causing this?

A: It's most likely the sensor, thermostat or both. Thermostat is easier and cheaper to replace ( you could do it) but the sensor is more difficult. Consult an auto electrician. Good luck.

Q: thinking about buying a 2004 Passat, 1.8 L turbo?
I have a 2000 Jetta w/75K and will unload it soon. I'm looking to possibly buy a 2004 Passat, but after researching it, the oil sludge problem looks very ugly. The 2004 Passats(1.8 L) i'm looking at are around the 45-60K mile range. Also, If I buy it and it's a vw certified pre-owned, should I still have worries?

A: Actually you will be glad to hear. Volkswagen implemented an extended warranty for oil sludge related repairs for 1998-2004 model year Volkswagen Passat equipped with the Turbo engines to 8 years from the vehicle's original date without a mileage limitation. And the best part is the extended warranty transfers to anyone who purchases the vehicle. A piece of advise......run a high quality oil in your car like mobil 1 and you will be fine. It is mostly the cheap oils that break down and cause the sludge.

Q: cruise control on 2004 passat doesn't work?
I have a certified pre-loved passat that i purchased in july. I never had a need to use the cruise control feature until yesterday on my way to New Haven, Connecticut from my house in Syracuse. I went to turn it on and nothing. i pulled over, got my manual for the car out and found out i was doing everything right. so why is my cruise control not working? if i bring it into a VW dealership down here, will they fix it for me? if so, is it covered under warranty or do i have to pay for it? Either way, I don't want to drive another 6 hours back home without my cruise control on Sunday. well i meant the pre-loved warranty, not the original one.

A: hey there, i was in New Haven too yesterday, and i also happen to own a VW, not Passat, but a Jetta. it might be a fuse, or short in the wire. Since you bought it certified pre-owned with the "pre-loved" warranty, it will be covered by VW. There's a VW dealer in Stratford(Carran VW) and another one in Watertown(Valenti VW), then a little farther away in Stamford(Riverbank VW) and lastly New Country VW(Greenwich)
