Q: please explan the belt situation on a 1999 VW passat?
I have one and its about to hit 94k miles on it. i have not have any major work done to the engine and have had the oil changed regularly. what should i fear? what should i do? Should i get the belt changed in advance before something goes wrong? which belt? i dont want to hear from any VW bashers, just people who know what they are talking about.

A: As the above person has explained, it is the timing belt, I assume that you are talking about. The timing belt is a very important item; on 4 cylinder it is due at 105,000 miles maximum or 7 years , however, if you have a V6, its long overdue. On the v6, the belt should be replaced at 60,000 miles or 6 years. In any case, it is due for replacement. The timing belt will usually last longer than the replacement interval, however, should it fail, you would be in for an expensive repair; at the very least, it would damage some valve in a cylinder head, at the worst, a motor replacement is possible. Always have the water pump and front engine seals replaced at the same time; you'd save a lot of labour later when those components fail and you'll need to remove the timing belt again to service them. It is also a good idea to replace all the fan belts at the same time since they have to come off in order to replace the timing belt anyway. Don't try to save money by delaying the replacement of the timing belt; it's foolish economy... you cannot predict when and where the timing belt will fail and when it does (and it will) the repair cost will make you financially poor. Hope this helps, a car nut.

Q: Vw Passat 1999 Running Bad?
I asked for help a little while ago and it was helful but not my solution so im asking again. VW passat 1999 not running well, symptoms are start and immediate stall unless u gas it then it gives you s chopped up response, choking, rpm between 0 and 2.5 are rough, hp loss on high and low end wont pass 4.5 rpm driving. Changed coils, air mass flow, sparks, removed catalytic, air passages are opened, turbo runs. When computer goes in default mode everthing runs, removed air mass, temp sensor, and catalytic everthing runs. I t seems to point to the ecu 8d0907557p which im having trouble to locate one. Have only found 1 at 400$ dont want to buy it if its not the problem. Any suggestions before I buy this unit. Ty in advance Cosmas The car has been tested on the computer changed coils 1&3 because of computer. A VW expert with 25yrs+ is on it he's stumped too. My ecu had some buildup and was clean by brush but seems to be the last resort before taking apart evey wire in the car. Ty for advice but past that level already. Looking for expert opinion with someone who might have seen the same case. All the parts ive bought will be credited. Except ecu from scrap yards as mentioned above. (All hoses and preasure is good like I said in default mode it runs fine. So that rules out hoses, sparks, coils, etc) When I run it in default (limp mode) and reconnect mass air the problen returns. And engine starts to choke and misfire marking low input.

A: Just curious, you spent a fortune needlessly replacing working parts. Why not spend $ 70 for a proper diagnosis from a trained VW specialist. Internet guesses and replacing more parts is bound to get even more expensive.

Q: VW Passat 1999 model -- does not run smooth for initial few minutes after starting?
Hi, Recently i bought a VW Passat 1999 model from a private party listed in craigslist. Unfortunately that guy cheated somehow and i got check engine light on 3rd day itself. I took it to one auto service shop..He took few iterations to find the problem (spent around $800 :-(. After all rounds, he finally told problem is carbon build up on cylinders and it may cost like $4K. I could not afford that much so i am just driving it..Its running fine. One thing i observe is, first 2-3 minutes of driving is not smooth. I have to hit gas even for going at 10 to 20 miles/hours. and it makes some kind of noice for that time and it struggles to move. After few minutes it runs smooth. Any ideas..what is the issue or is there any other solution to my check engine light..appreciate your help on this.

A: That noise is the Secondary Air Pump. It runs for the first few minutes after start up. It is VERY common for the Passat's to run poorly during that time. There is a reflash you can get at your local dealer to help with the problem.

Q: where can i get a vehicle speed sensor for a 1999 vw passat 1.8t?

A: the first two answers are the right way to go!

Q: VW passat 1999 how hard would it e to change my cv joints on this car as well as the brakes.?
i dont have mush mechanical experience, but very novice. should i do it? how much would a shop charge? for driver and passenger outer cv joints?

A: I guess it depends on a couple of things. Do you really "want" to do the work yourself? Do you have the time, energy, and workspace? Do you have a good, sturdy jack, and jack stands? CV joint and Brake repair is straightforward, however, if you've never completed a task like this, it will take you some time to figure things out. There are torque specifications involved. You may need to purchase a tool or two. Specifically, a special bit to loosen the CV joint bolts. If you really, really, really want to do it yourself, take the time to crawl under the car and look around at A) what you want to replace and B) what needs to be taken off to get to what you want to replace. Working on your own car can be rewarding, however, if you don't have the time or energy to complete the task, perhaps it's best to pay a trusted mechanic. Not Midas or Meineke or even the dealer. Those places will screw almost every time.

Q: 1999 vw passat 1.8T?
Okay okay. SOOO i just got this car and it was a surprise. I havent drove it or anything, i seen pictures tho. Its cute but i wanna know about it i know NOTHING about cars im a typical G-I-R-L (not saying all girls dont know about cars) but yeahhh, sooo is it a good car? and i just wanna know about it lol I googled it and yeah but idk Thanks

A: I own an Audi A4 1.8T (same engine). The factory says you need new timing belt at 90K miles. Don't trust them. Get it at every 60K miles to be safe. Many people online are reporting engine failure because the timing belt broke as early at 70K miles (or even earlier). Also make sure you ALWAYS use full synthetic oil. THIS IS A MUST!!! The turbo gets really hot (even on mild driving) and cooks regular oil until it becomes a sludge (major engine damage). At a pinch you can easily and safely add regular oil. But not during the oil change. === People don't seem to know that automatic tranny need oil change. Normally that would at about 30K miles. But on VW / Audi that would be long life tranny fluid @ 100K miles (audi long life tranny fluid - not the regular ATF). The coolant is also long life, but they need flushing at about 60K miles or 5 years. Just make sure you use VW / Audi coolant (G12). Don't use the regular PRESTONE or Dex-cool. I made that mistake and got sold matter caking inside. Good Luck...

Q: 1999 VW Passat. Is hard tostart.?
Once its running, you have to go real easy on gas pedal to get engine to race. If you push fast on gas pedal, it will try to die out. Already replaced mass air flow sensor, air cleaner, and fuel pump. I am at a loss on this. The only code left in the computer is a temp sensor failure, but I don't think this would be cause because its been on for years and the temp guage hasn't worked just as long. ANY IDEAS????

A: a faulty temp sensor will cause the engine to constantly enrich the fuel trim which can wear out the o2 sensors but this should set a fault. You may have a very dirty throttle plate causing the vacuum source to be plugged. Also can have restricted intake either from the air filter pipe, intercooler, turbo, etc. Strange that there are no codes tho. Also dont forget the basic maintenance items like spark plugs, fuel filter, etc, good luck

Q: HELP!!!! 1999 vw Jetta and Passat ??????????
hello, please help me. i am looking for my 1st car. I definately wanna go foreign.. so far i have checked out a 99 VW passat (64k) 1.8 engine & 99 vw jetta 2.0 engine (74k). the passat is turbo and has power everything. the jetta is jus a basic model only power locks. I have read alot about both of these cars and am trying to be a good consumer and do my reasearch as both cars are used. alot of people are saying that these are bad cars, and have tons and tons of expensive problems. esp. the 2.0 engine. ok so i really want some strong advice. esp. from v-dud owners and mechanics. Help Help Help Help........ What is up with the reliability of these cars... i though VW were great reliable cars. please only give me answers relevant to my question!!!!!

A: ".... i though VW were great reliable cars" They are very nice cars, if you drive them nice. you need to take a good care of them if you want to drive them a long time, and they are very fun cars. 2.0 engines are not that bad, I mean they do not have so much power but they have a very good amont torque. Which means when you are crousing in highway, with a bit of throttle they speed up. It helps the engine last longer. I drove a lot of cars BMW, Toyota Camry, Mitsubishi Galant, Honda Civic , Mazda 3, Saturns and Fords. ( in my family ) I found my jetta as reliable as my moms Camry! and in fact, mine will last much longer because the Camry's V6 engine is not good anymore for highways because it burns A LOT of oil. and it has the same mile as my Jetta.
