Q: Why does my 2001 VW Jetta 2.0L make a funny sound?
I own a 2001 VW Jetta 2.0 Automatic and the other day it started making this funny sound which to me sounded like the muffler. It sounds like an old go kart when i drive away. The other day it died on but it turned right back on. Im not too sure what it could be but it sounds like the muffler is loose or something. I also noticed that it lost its power recently. It used to haul some ass but not so much. Any ideas?

A: If the car actually died while running it sounds like you have a clogged catalytic converter, if its ALSO sounding like its straight piped (no muffler) the clogged cat probably blew a hole in it letting the exhaust out before the muffler. And a 2.slow.... does not haul a**..... ever..... lol...

Q: I have a 2001 VW Jetta the AC just went out, still blows air just not cold. Whats the deal?
a friend of mine said it might be a fuse? another said I need freon? Im trying to avoid a 600 dollar fix. any ideas?

A: def. sounds like you need freon...kinda pricey but who the hell wants to drive w/o AC ...good luck

Q: how do you open the hood of a 2001 VW Jetta?
nothing is broken. It's my wife's car and i've never opened it before. she's lost the manual.

A: its down at your foot panel...............left or right.........depending on if your in uk or states

Q: 2001 VW Jetta trunk will only open with the key, not with the remote or inside switch.?
I can hear a clicking noise by the fuse box when I try to use the remote and inside button but I don't hear any noise from the trunk area. Does anyone have any ideas to fix this problem?

A: Check the fuses first since that's the easiest thing to do then try tracing the wiring to see if anything has been torn apart.

Q: 2001 VW Jetta hesitation sometimes rough idle?
I recently purchased a 2001 VW jetta with 90K miles on it. It's a 2.0 non-turbo with a five speed manual (I traded from an automatic Explorer). I love the car so far but sometimes at speed of about 55 it's like it bumps a little bit, kind of like hesitation or a toned down version of what it feels like to run out of gas the bump bump before it cuts off, also sometimes it idles really fast when it's first started up and then once on the road it calms right down, this is my first german car so I am VERY gun shy if you are a VW person with experience on these matters or any good advice for a first time Vdubber let me know your advice, I really hope it's nothing major. I hope I didn't make a mistake switching from american/japanese cars. THANKS!

A: it sound like it has a vacuum leak. the common thing on Jetta are those plastic and rubber pcv hoses. they breaks all the time

Q: Speedometer needle keeps cutting out on my 2001 VW Jetta. What could it be?
I have an 01 Jetta with 54k on it and recently I've noticed that when I start up my car the speedometer won't work. The other gauges are fine but the speedometer won't work. It's cold here in Chicago but that shouldn't be the cause. Anyone else had this problem and what was the issue?

A: The speedometer may be broken. You can replace it by buying a used one but you will have to reprogram it at the dealership. Check at the dealership for better info. One more thing is that the speed sensor (VSS) can be brokeen. It is located on the bottom of the transmision and it is close to the axle. The VSS also drives the speedometer on the instument panel.

Q: I own a 2001 VW Jetta and my cigarette/power outlet does not work Can you help me fix it?
I used to keep change in the ash tray next to the outlet and believe a penny may have fallen in at some point. I am wanting to have my car charger now in my car along with a GPS system is there an easy way to fix it? Is it just a short in the fuse? I am moving in a few days and would really like to have this working.... any suggestions would be helpful!

A: Check the fuse.

Q: 2001 vw jetta, check engine light on, ran 2 different code readers and it says not responding.?
I had 2 different code readers ran on my car, both are say - not responding. I have had the same person run codes before and was able to tell me what I needed to fix. They seem to think computer? Thank you! My husband is trying to talk to our regular repairman - (not dealer) looks like Mon for new computer.

A: Do you have an aftermarket stereo in the car? That can affect the ability to pull codes. Also - many generic readers will not get you all of the information that you need. Typically with the VW you need specific tools to get the VW codes. Maybe a bad fuse, bad wiring ground, bad plug - have these all been ruled out? And as far as the other reply to have the dealer just change it with one out of another car - not as easy as it sounds. You have to pay for labor to pull 2 computers, program it to your car once in, then put it back into the other car and program it back to that car when done.

Q: 2001 VW Jetta Shimmy Problem?
I have a 2001 VW Jetta, manual transmission. When I am driving 25 mph or faster and press on the brake pedal the car starts to vibrate or shimmy. It appears that the problem is coming from the front of the vehicle. There is no noise or clunking present at any time while driving the car. Any clues as to what this might be??? Thanks.

A: Your problem is warped rotors in the front of the vehicle. Not something to worry about more of an annoyance than anything else. When heat builds as you use your brakes sometimes the rotors will heat up enough to warp slightly. Once this occurs when you hit your brakes one pad is going to touch before the other does causing a shimmy side to side as the pads touch the rotor one at a time. It often also causes the brake pedal to jump under your foot a bit and the steering wheel to move side to side. It can be resolved by either replacing the rotors or having them machined to smooth them back down so that pads touch evenly again. Hope this helps feel free to message me if you need more info. :)

Q: 2001 VW Jetta VR6 Auto Transmission issue?
I have a 2001 VW Jetta VR6 with Automatic Transmission. When I am driving, it will start off ok in first gear. Then when upshifting from 2nd to 3rd and from 3rd to 4th, there is a small transition through neutral. During this time, the engine will Rev up a few hundred RPM and the car will jump into the next gear. Often it might cause a *thud* or Jerk when jumping/shifting up. This usually happens when cold ... usually mornings. Has anyone else experienced this issue? If so, what did you apply as a solution? What did it cost you? I am the second owner of the car and the car has done 57000 miles. I believe the VW warrenty is only 5yr/50k for second owners. The dealer told me it is a TCM (Transmission Control Module) issue. I am not convinced.

A: Quite unusual on a vw... You have leaking internal clutch seal(s), and the only option is an overhaul which is quite expensive - $2000 or so, maybe more if there is damage to hard parts. Everything on these cars is unreasonably expensive as you probably already know.

Q: How do I get rid of the crayon smell in my 2001 VW Jetta?

A: I had the SAME PROBLEM!!! Had the same year and everything. I got my car professionally cleaned (the seats, carpets, everything....) The smell never went away. Just one of those things you have to live with. I tried all sorts of air fresheners, nothing worked for me, either. Sorry!

Q: I am looking into buying a 1999-2001 VW Jetta. Are they a good first car?
Mileage? Mantinence? Dependability? Safety?

A: I would get the Jetta. They are superb cars. I have had a 1993,a 1995,a 1988,and a 2007 model. All have been superb. Good looking, safe ,comfortable, beswt trunk, excellent resale, fun to drive, economical, and reliable. I am a big VW fan because of the image, which is trendy, funky, and upmarket.

Q: Cost of replacing a water pump in 2001 VW Jetta 2.0 Gas?
I am wondering how much it is going to cost for me to replace the broken water pump in my 2001 VW Jetta 2.0 Gas car. For your information, I took the car to the dealership repair shop and they quoted me $800.00. I am pretty sure that this amount is greatly overly priced. Can anyone out there disect me the following: 1. the "usual" price of the water pump part itself . 2. the cost of labor to install the new water pump . 3. the amount of time it should take to have professionals install the new water pump. 4. and last, is it possible for an amateur person, like myself, to install the water pump itself? 5. I don't know where the water pump is actually located.. if you could tell me where it is it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !!!!

A: 20$ to 45$
