Q: Ford Focus SVT vs. VW GTI MK IV vs. Mazdaspeed Protege?
I am thinking about buying a car in this price range, a little under 10k, but I don't have experience with driving different cars. I am wondering how the performance is on these cars. I would most likely not put performance parts on it for a while. I looked at other sites for the protege, and they did not look too reliable, but the focus and gti look like they are. I live in Michigan and wonder how these cars would handle in the snow (with snow tires, or without) The Focus SVT and the Speed Protege are not similar. The SVT had many internals changes, such as the valves and springs, and it has VVT and a dual stage intake manifold. Basically Mazda strapped a turbo on the Protege so it can only run at 8psi, so I wouldn't even be able to upgrade it ever, unless I replaced out all the internals so it could handle more boost. Plus the SVT has a nice getrag 6-speed. Im not saying the protege is deuce, or i wouldn't have asked about it in the question, but they are two different cars. If one gets its performance from a turbo and one is all motor and they have the same hp rating, they must have something different. I have heard many stories of proteges that had their motors replaced at about 20k miles, and many svts that people say are really reliable, so I am not sure because I would always trust Mazda, but I would trust Ford too, and I would also trust a German company, but they seemed to have declined over the years.

A: The Ford Focus and Mazda are basically the same car. The drive train was designed by the same team and there is no real reliability difference between them. Select the one you like the looks of better. VWs quality took a serious nose dive in the late 1990s when they got a new purchasing manager and I have seen little sign it has recovered since. And it costs tons more to get a European car repaired compared to a Japanese or American car.

Q: Where can I find this part for my VW?
I have a VW GTI. There is a cord that holds onto the rear hatch that opens up the trunk thing. Mine broke today I have no clue what to call it or where to find it.

A: Check your local salvage yards and car-parts.com. It is too expensive to buy as new one at the dealership. Learn to save some cash and do it yourself.

Q: Do they sell 'hot hatches' other than the VW Gold GTi in the US?
In the UK, quite a few manufacturers sell 'hot' versions of their compact hatchback cars with anything from 180 to 265bhp, and more performance orientated parts like the suspension, brakes etc. to make sure they corner well too. Costing from about £16,000 upwards. An example would be the VW Golf GTi. Other than that are there any others on sale in the US? More examples from the UK would be: Mini Cooper S, Mazda 3 MPS, Honda Civic Type R, Ford Focus ST, Seat Leon Cupra, Audi S3, Vauxhall/Opel Corsa VXR, Vauxhall Astra VXR, Renault Megane R26. I would imagine these would be quite good in the US as they're powerful but not ridiculously bad on mpg, which wouldn't matter as much anyway, yet they're still good for taking the kids to school and doing the shopping etc. but maybe most Americans would prefer something bigger and cheaper? (and more like driving a bus lol) just noticed the typo in the title, should be golf not gold

A: In US we have Mini Cooper S, Mazda 3 MPS, Ford Focus, Volvo C30 T5, I know bmw has a hatch. we have Civic Si hatch with same engine same hatch but ours only have 165hp. And not like type R engine from UK or japan. now we have si coupe and sedan witch it has 200hp. we also have RSX type S(integra) The new 08 Impreza wrx, and sti is hatch now. The new 09 wrx has 265hp witch its way better than previous 225hp wrx. But I did just go for the sti its better, but pricy. I like everything about the gti but except the car is bit heavy for a hatch back I mean 1600kg that's a lot for a hot hatch. Other than that its all good. U.S is great place for motor sport. And you don't have to pay Co2 tax. The only problem is we have limits on modifying our cars in some states

Q: Are the aftermarket parts for a 2007/8 volkswagen GLI the same as a 2007/8 GTI MkV?
such as: exhausts, intakes, etc... I can't seem to find any parts that are made for the VW "GLI" Most of them are for the GTI. Links to credible shops are appreciated. Inexpensive and credible even better! :] @JanWy They both have the same specs.. therefore I am concluding it has the same turbo and engine. I know the GTi doesn't have a twin turbo,

A: For engine related then they should be the same, exhaust etc then not so much. Check vwvortex.com, there are all sorts or links

Q: How easy would it be for a mechanic to replace a VW Golf MK4's ignition barrel lock, door locks and boot lock?
I'm about to purchase a full VW Golf 1999 full lock set (second hand) this includes boot lock, door locks and ignition barrel lock from a salvage yard who dismantled a golf gti mk4. It will come with 2 remote keys and I was wondering how much of a job it would be for a mechanic to fit these parts to my VW Golf GTi turbo (5 door 1999 model). I want to know if it is worth purchasing these parts. The remote keys will need to be programmed with my car again. I think I found a company that do it for cheap anyway. I'm just slightly worried about the car coming with 1 key. In the back of my mind I'm wondering where the other keys for the car are. The last owner said there was only 1. I just want to be on the safe side. Don't want to wake up one morning and my car is gone. An audi I had in the past had 3 keys. 2 remote and 1 standard key. My last golf had 2 remote keys. It's either I change the locks or get a tracker installed. Even if I get a tracker installed I'll still only have 1 key and if I was to loose that 1 day I would be in a mess. Mechanics your advice would help me a lot right now. This car was purchased for commuting to and from uni. So i just want to sort out everything before I start in september. The car has an immobilizer and alarm but if someone out there has the spare key. They could just walk up to the car and press the remote button to open the door and drive off with it.

A: Hi, Hope ths helps you... I own a garage, and if you came in, this is the following advice I would give you... 1) If someone wants to steal your car, believe me they will, key or no key. There is some really sophisticated equipment out there nowadays and considering brand new mercs and BMW's are stolen every day, I really don't think changing the lock set is going to make an ounce of difference. 2) Call your local VW dealer and give them your vehilce details. You may have to take your reg doc and/or ID in, but they will order you a replacement key to CHASSIS NUMBER. Your vehilce details are store on a database, national vehilce security register, and they will be able to get hold of your key number and have a new key made up for you which can be coded to the car. Keys are prob around £30-£50. 3) Trackers are a good idea, but I beleive only 5% of my customers have one fitted to their vehilce, and one of my customers who did have their car stolen, never got it recovered...it just went missing. As your vehicle is a sought after one, I would invest in traditional route anti theft such as steering locks(or two!), Alarms, Immobilisers, etc. Theives hate to have to try too hard! (You can also disconnect certain wires/leads every night to completely disable the vehilce and make it harder to be stolen - google it!) 4) Please dont bother with the whole replacement lockset. It could end up quite costly, and you cannot be sure the equipment is fully working or will last if bought second hand. I hope this helps you save money and gives you some peice of mind. Any more questions, just ask

Q: Where can I buy VW bodyparts???
I recently had litle accident with my 06 VW GTI !! And I'm planing to buy all necesary part and fix it by myself... But I just cannot find where to buy those bodyparts... thanks for advices!!

A: Well, the dealer will for sure have them, and they might not be as expensive as you think. Next option is a junkyard. Third option is "Tiawanese aftermarket": sometimes they don't fit quite right, although they are getting better. Often cheaper than used parts I can get all these: check out my website http://econofix.com

Q: My Car stereo was stolen at the dealer?
My vw GTi was at a local vw dealer to get a warranty-covered repair. They didn't have the part to replace in-stock, so they kept my car in the shop overnight while waiting for the ordered part. Unfortunately, while my car was inside their shop overnight. Somebody stole my Eclipse headunit. Is the dealer responsible to reimburse me for the stolen headunit? If they refuse to pay for it, what can I legally do? Thanks!

A: my friend's car was left in a shop once and theives stole a bunch of stuff from the shop (and stuff from his car). The shop's insurance paid for them I think

Q: HI! i have a cuestion about my mkv gti.?
i want to make some changes on it, like add a blow off valve inteke, exhauts sytem but i don't want to lose my warranty so theres is any performance parts approved by vw dealers or company??? where can i get it????

A: Don't get a blow off valve. It will give you a Check Enigne Light. Your car is a closed loop system, so you need a diverter valve.

Q: What small car should i buy for boot space in UK?
Im looking at getting a VW polo 1.4 04/05 reg only 3 or 4 yrs old - Im looking for boot space to be able to put a fold away push chair in? Ive had a polo before a 1997 - boot space isnt that great - What car should i look at that is reliable, cheap for parts etc only wanna spend £6 - 7k also - i'll only be doing 10k miles a year,. i was also looking at and audi a2? but if its nearly new i shoudl have problems with service etc. what a bout golf ? not GTi but for boot space mabye cheaper - id like to have qucik accelartion - but not a psorts car so it affects insurance.

A: Renault clio it has the most room inside in its range. I have a W reg 1.4 version that i get 40+ to the gallon out of. Renault parts are a bit pricy though but imagine probably still cheaper than VW

Q: Are Mazdaspeed 3s Reliable?
I own at 2001 VW GTI and have had a long 6 yr. love hate relationship with it. It has all the things I want in a car: speed, leather interior, sun roof, monsoon sound system, seat warmers, cool dash lighting, etc. VERY fun to drive and easy to park. But man, it was always in the shop...TONS of problems. I saw the Mazdaspeed 3 at a dealer yesterday and fell in love. I dont know much about the track record for Mazdas though. Are they reliable? Or are they fussy with lots of problems like most German cars? I have heard that the Mazdaspeed 3 has paint that chips too easily, and the cloth part of the seats wear out quickly with very little use and that it isn't too safe to drive in wet weather because of the FWD. Anyone have more specific info on any of this? I also heard from two mechanics that "Mazdas don't have good track records" but everyone else seems to love em. My heart seems set on a Mazdaspeed 3 but I don't want another car with lotsa probs like my GTI. What should I do? Thanks for all the answers, folks, a big help. I was disappointed to find out that the stereo system in the speed3 sucks in terms of sound and with no MP3 ability. I also heard the AC is weak and yo, NO SUNROOF?!?!?!? Oy.......

A: I think you'll find your GTI is FWD too, either that or it will be AWD. Stick some decent tyres (Spelt right in the UK) on the mazda and it'll grip fine, not all FWD cars are a handful in the wet, only if you try to be a little adventurous on the corners and there are skid control techniques to control understeer if you're that worried. Mazda used to be Japanese, but I think they're part of Ford now. Japanese cars tend to have a trend of having very thin paintwork and so will chip easily, I reckon this trend has been carried on when Ford bought them. The Mazda won't be anywhere near as good on quality, eg dash materials etc. but it should be reasonably reliable because they still use the Japanese Mazda engine designs. I would be careful on the electrics though

Q: VW Golf distributor cap?
i am having my golf serviced by a friend and i am buying the parts but we arnt sure if i need a distributor cap and rotor arm. it is a mk 3 golf Gti 2.0 1996 cheers

Distributor cap: http://www.germanautoparts.com/Volkswagen/Golf/EngineElectrical/48/2 Rotor: http://www.germanautoparts.com/Volkswagen/Golf/EngineElectrical/176/6 Wires: http://www.germanautoparts.com/Volkswagen/Golf/EngineElectrical/250/4 Everything else you'll ever need: www.germanautoparts.com

Q: What is the hotter car?
what car is hotter? a 93-99 vw golf gti or a 95-99 eclipse? the golf would be a fun car to have and parts a cheap for it and u dont see many of them, so it would be something different. but an eclipse would be alot faster and parts are very cheap for thos too. but i dont want to look like ever other punk teenager. so tell me what car would be better???

A: There both good. Drive both and go from there.

Q: Last minute Car choice help!!!?
Ok if you couldn't get a Subaru WRX what other car would u rather have. (Honda Civic SI Hatch 03, VW 1.8T Jetta/GTI, Mazda 3, BMW 3 (series but parts are crazy), Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V or Mustang GT?)

A: 1-BMW 2-Civic 3-Mustang 4-Jetta 5- Sentra Focus on the price after buy it, the Civic is the best according maintenance and re-selling price.

Q: Do I need a new gear box?
I have got a T reg Golf GTI Turbo, last week I was driving and as I pushed the clutch down to change gear it just sort of just disappeared. I pulled over as I was a bit confused and phoned my dad, he told me to get it off of the main road I need to turn the ignition OFF and put it into 1st and just rev it to try and get it moving. I stupidly didn't listen to the part where he said turn the car OFF and tried to put it into gear with the ignition on! After crunching the gears it just seemed to fall into 1st gear but as I revved the engine it didn't move. The clutch is now fixed (a bit of metal snapped off of the pedal) and I can get 3rd and 4th gear but none of the others. I have been told that there is no way I could have completely wrecked the gear box and that I could have bent the selector!!?? I don't want to take it to a garage yet as I don't want them to rip me off! I've looked on a VW website and a new gear box is £1,250! PLEASE HELP?

A: Having a shop "look and evaluate" the car will not cost you much and would be worth the money spent to get the answer you need, but not the dealer. Do not buy a "new" gear box, but rather one from a wrecking yard or from a private party selling/parting out their vehicle. You can pick one up for half the price you stated. As for bending the selector, that is hard to do, and if you can find 3rd and 4th in their normal position, then the selector is not bent. To totally destroy a gear box is a tough task. It will be worth your time to find an honest shop to help you out. Find one that has or sponsors a VW race car, as they tend to be much easier on the pocket book and friendlier.
