Q: How good is a VW Golf GTI?
Hey, I am currently looking for a slick, fast new ride. I want to sell my current car for about $3000, and want to buy a used GTI with it. I want to know is the GTI is the way to go, maybe some specs, and personal opinions. Write as long of an answer you want, I am seriously thinking about getting one so I want a lot of good information. How much can I get a good running GTI for? Also, what is the best year? I obviously cant afford a brand new one... so include that into your answer. Thanks!

A: for that much money you can get a g60 or even vr6 corrado. but you should be able to find a 1990-1997 gti in a fair condition for that much money.the ones that are really tuned up go for at least $5000 dollars.but not long ago there was a 95 2.0 gti for $3800 dollars and another one, black 95 gti vr6 for $4200 dollars with lots of kms tough. hope that helps

Q: is 95k miles too many for a '02 VW GTI?
i'm thinking of getting a used '02 volkswagen gti 1.8T but it has 95k miles on it. do you think that i should still get it despite its mileage? do you think it will still run good and strong and last long for a good amount of years?

A: No!!! I would heasitate even with shorter mileage. GTI models and especially WW have often been driven by young drivers. And guess how a young driver drives a GTI? If I would consider buying I would demand a perfect service log. And I would be very very kinky checking change periods for timingbelt and pressure wheel .

Q: What are your opinions of the VW (24V) GTI VR6?
I'm looking to buy used.

A: good thing you want used because they dont make a vr6 gti any longer. the vr6 is a very nice motor, but you should give the 1.8T a try too.

Q: 1996 vw gti issue. possibly the ICV?
i have a 96 vw gti. i put an aftermarket turbo kit on there. the issue is that when i start my car, it revs up really high and then dies. i can step on the gas and try to keep it at idle, but as soon as i let go or if i try to shift, it dies. i am assuming it is the idle control unit that went bad. i am not sure and i don't have the funds to take it to the mech. i used to work on helicopters so i can change this by myself. are my assumptions correct about this situation. b4 this happened, my engine sputtered, and when i was at a light, there was violent shaking and my turbo didn't seem like it was spooling up cuz i didn't hear the blow off valve release. please help

A: check all of your vacuum lines first. if one is bad it can make your engine sputter and die. also make sure the throttle body and maf are clean of any gunk. i beleive on 96 and newer engines the icv is intergrated into the throttle body so if that is the culprit I think you may need a new TB. check vwvortex.com if you have any other problems, you can usually find the answer there.

Q: regular unleaded or premium for my vw gti?
does it really make that much of a difference which one i use?

A: Having a turbo raises the compression level. Running higher octane will give you better performance b/c the engine can fully compress the fuel/air mixture. Higher octane = higher flash point = higher compression. Higher compression will give you better HP and also better fuel efficiency while cruising. Anti-knock sensor or not, I would rather run the right thing than rely on a sensor to keep my engine running. Running low octane in a high compression engine can lead to detonation which can destroy an engine. The anti-knocking sensor works by de-tuning the engine to prevent the knock. This causes you to lose power and efficiency. High Compression =/= High Compression Ratio.

Q: What is a better car the 05 VW GTI or the 05 Nissan Sentra Spec-v SE-R...i?
im thinking of puchasing these two, but i want one that very reliable, for everyday use, good MPG, good handling, quick speed...i just dont want answers as "nissan sucks vw is better.." be relaistic please...

A: the SE-R is good on gas and good for looks but the gti is good to!! but if i was 2 pick it would be the SE-R cause if u like speed it has speed! cause i have one of my own and it is quick but that just me i guess well go for it but I'll tell u this if u buy the gti u WILL spend alot more to fix it, not like the SE-R it will cost less to fix it, all japans car are GOOD on gas and parts and looks but the gti naw!!! u will probable spend 50% more to but parts. just put it this way i spend about $2,536.93 just to get ever thing fix for my SE-R u will pay that plus 50% more to fix your gti u see cause all parts r made driffent so pick the se-r ok but if u like the gti go for it but u'll reget it soon hope it help u to find ur right car laterz

Q: Is there a good do-it-yourself book/manual I could buy that would help me to work on my 2006 VW GTI? UTI?
I am 17 years old and just bought a pre-owned 2006 VW GTI (oh yeah, it's a six speed manual tranny!). The only couple of shops around here are way overpriced and don't like to work on European cars. I barely trust them. I want to go to UTI and become an Auto Technician and I want a good base to start from. A guy at work suggested I find a book on my car that will help me do things such as oil changes and tune-ups to using a diagnostic tool to installing a stage II turbo. Is there any such book that could guide me through such processes? It doesn't have to be all inclusive of the said examples. I'm just dying to be able to work on my car and not have to bring it in to any shop. Thanks much!

A: Bentley publishers makes good repair manuals for vws. They run about a hundred bucks new or 60ish used. I don't know if the one for mk6 is out yet but it should be soon.

Q: VW Golf GTI fuel consumption?
i want a VW Golf GTI for my next car and i was wondering how much fuel it uses every 100 km. i looked it up on google it said 4.5 liters every 100 km. is that right? and how much does it cost? also if the fuel consumption is correct. the prius does 4.8 liter every 100 km. the GTI does 4.5 liters every 100 km. wtf it's not even a hybrid

A: Using the same standardized lab test procedures (ADR81/01) against each car (so that you can compare them) http://www.greenvehicleguide.gov.au/gvgpublicui/Staticcontent/ratings.aspx , you can only get that fuel economy on the road if you drive like the tests. Most governmental test cycles are very generous and tend to be more inflated than what you'll see in real-world driving. If you know the fuel economy you get in your driving in your current car, you can look up its fuel economy http://www.environment.gov.au/settlements/transport/fuelguide/ and find the percentage difference between your driving and the standardized test for that model car, and then apply that percentage to the car that you are looking at. The VW Golf GTI is listed at 8.0-8.2 L/100km, depending on transmission. http://www.volkswagen.com.au/vwcms_publish/etc/medialib/vwcms/virtualmaster/en_au/common/pdf.Par.0015.File.pdf and the recommended retail price is: Golf GTI 3 Door 6 Speed Manual AU$38,490.00 Golf GTI 3 Door 6 Speed DSG AU$40,790.00 Golf GTI 5 Door 6 Speed Manual AU$39,990.00 Golf GTI 5 Door 6 Speed DSG AU$42,290.00 The Toyota Prius is listed at 4.4 L/100km. http://www.toyota.com.au/toyota/vehicle/Content/0,4664,5048_842,00.html Of course, your actual fuel economy will depend on how you drive, and how maintained the car is, and environmental conditions. Small things like checking your tire pressure, and not speeding, can make a big difference.

Q: New Driver looking between 06+ VW GTI or Scion tC!?
Hey guys! I have been driving for close to 5 months now under my permit and I have recently gotten my license. The two cars that I have done research on that I like the most hands down are the GTI and the tC. I have heard that the GTI is soo much fun to drive and is great for performance and handling. The tC im not as familiar about...I still hear it is a great reliable car that is more of a clear canvas to customize. The most I can probably spend on a car would be 20k-22k and used would be a better option and would convince my parents easier. So please I would love to here people from both ends and experince with these cars...Thanks!!

A: can't go wrong with a v dub

Q: 2001 VW GTI - check engine light - mechanic reset & came back!?
The check engine light came on a few weeks ago, we took to local VW mechanic (not dealer but only works on VW) and he reset it and said nothing was wrong. Then it stayed off two weeks or so and came back on, and then went off on its own and was off a week or so. Then it came back, we took it back to mechanic. He said that it's due to us using premium gas (which is what the manual calls for) but that we should use a lower grade. Again it stayed off a week and is now back on. And no it's not a loose gas cap (which will turn on check engine light in this car). Any suggestions? I dislike the service dept at local dealer and their hours are really inconvenient, but should I bring it there? I've read it could be a sensor, do I need to have something replaced? we just got a new battery in August 2008, so I hope it's not that. we'll have to ask mechanic code next time. He said fuel was "light" which was okay, but if it was "heavy" it would indicate a problem.

A: Go to Auto Zone and they will give you the code for free. Tell me the code and I will tell you what is wrong with your car.

Q: Where have all the MK3 VW Golf GTI,s gone. (1991-1998 model)?
You used to see loads on the road now they are very scares. Thank you.

A: It was never a huge seller, mainly because it was nowhere near as good as the MK1 and MK2 Golf GTis. There are still a few around, including the VR6 version, which at least was as fast as a GTi should be. Also, the newest one would be 10 years old by now, and without wishing to upset all the VW fans, contrary to popular opinion, VWs don't last forever, many of them got crashed, some got too expensive to keep going, others just died off due to a lack of the enthusiastic support that the earlier models enjoyed.

Q: synthetic oil, syn blend vw gti?
i was using a syn blend oil and got my oil changed today then dropped by the dealer ship and talked with them they told me that i should be using full synthetic. i didnt want to drop another $75 on an oil change so i drained all of the syn blend out and replaced it with a full syn but i didnt change the filter since it was brand new. it took 4qts of the 4.5 capacity so i have 4 qts syn and .5 syn blend is that going to be okay till my next change? the oil is the same brand and the same weight.

A: You're good to go. Just make sure the oil level is correct.

Q: vw golf or gti?
Im 17 and want to buy a used car. Im stuck between a 60k gti for 5k or a 65k golf for 4.3k there both 2000. The Gti is faster and fits into smaller spaces but the golf has more room for my friends and family. Me and my friends drive everywhere usually me and three- four others. which is more reliable? thanks.

A: vw in general very reliable. don't get the gti for your first car, you'll get stung on the insurance. go for the golf.

Q: 95 VW Golf GTI 2.0 4cyl Euro Spec Transmission problem.?
My transmission number starts with "CHE" I'm having a hard time finding a used replacement for it. Is there another code that would match the transmission that I have and does it matter if it's American or European specs?

A: I'm not too familiar with transmission codes. Its usually the gearing ratio that makes them have different designators. Check out VW vortex; you should be able to find one there in the classifieds. Shipping bit be a tad expensive though. Good luck!

Q: 1996 vw golf gti?
looking for some info on what could be causing my golf to be shuddering when accelerating, it seems to go up the revs ok until around 3000 rpm and then starts to shudder and hits a flat spot around 3-4000 revs and then starts shuddering again. replaced the plugs, leads distributor and tried using the injector cleaner also. No engine lights on, nothing showing up when its hooked up to computer either.

A: Dirty MAF sensor, bad 02 sensor or a clogged fuel filter are your most likely culprits. Throwing the check engine light? Grab some MAF Cleaner at your local auto part store. Gently remove the MAF sensor from the intake. Spray the MAF cleaner (follow directions on the can) onto the sensor (will look like a small wire / circuit). Let it dry and reinstall. Then replace your fuel filter. Get yourself a Bentley or Chilton manual for reference.
