adjustable struts

lowered shocks or inserts
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=ACC%2DC10%2D4062
lowered springs

To lower the back you need to disassemble the torsion bar/spring plate assembly and reclock the torsion bars. Best to at least have mechanical ability and a mechanical guru to look over your shoulder and advise you. Spring plates can be dangerous to the point of serious bodily harm if removed incorrectly. Easy to lose a finger or worse.
Buy a Bentley Manual if you take up the challenge. I knew next to squat about old VW's 10 years ago. I could service them but I hadn't a clue about their unique care and feeding. The Bentley is worth every penny.

Q: 1972 VW Beetle - Issues?!?
Hello,
the wheels are off set on one side. They are fine on one side, and are about 1" out on the other side. I'm not sure what caused this as they were like this when i bought the car. it pulls to one side also, i think this is due to the off set of the wheels. Any help would be appreciated. - Luke
A: My immediate thought on this one was the body not squarely located on the pan (chassis), however, this should not be possible unless the car has been in some horrific accident and a poor repair job carried out.
It would be difficult to offset the axles more on one side than the other.
Have you taken off the wheels and checked for spacers on the side that the wheels are sticking out. I would suspect that it is either this or you have different size rims on each side of the car. (spacers were often introduced on all wheels to give a wider spacing of the wheels to improve road holding)
Yes, if your wheels are sticking out more on one side than the other it will definitely affect the handling of the car.
Q: I need to replace a VW Beetle rear seat. Which modern cars seat will fit into the seat bracket of 1972 Beetle.
A: without modifying the frame, none.

Q: I have a 1972 Volkswagen Super Beetle with a very strange oil leak. Has anyone experience similar issues?
I have a 1972 VW Super Beetle. About a year ago it started leaking oil. But it's a different kind of oil leak. It wouldn't leak while it was parked but rather when it was running. I would put a quart of oil in drive it and shortly after the red oil light would come on. when i would open the engine hood oil would be dripping from the the hood itself as if it was spurting out from the engine. I just had the engine rebuilt and expected that this problem would be solved. Unfortunately it's still doing the exact same thing. I have no Idea what to do and neither does anyone I ask. I've heard that these cars are easy to work on but this problem has me stumped.
A: Hello. I've got a '67 Beetle with a 72 era engine(eng serial # shows that it was originally in a 72 SB), that's just been rebuilt by a local aircooled garage and I faced the same problem (even the oil light on idle). It turned out the problem was, the crankshaft oil seal, behind the pulley kept popping out when I was driving the car on the highway. Evidently, the oil was spurting out behind the pulley and was being slung all over the hood and engine compartment. When I would look at my hood, I could see and extra thick line of oil right where the hood would sit next to the pulley when shut.
Every month, once or twice, I drive the car from Norman, Okla, to Tulsa, Okla(about 125 mi) and the seal popped out three times. And each time I took it back to the guy, he replaced it and it popped out again. The last time, he epoxy-ed the crazy thing in and replaced my pulley as well. I've put 1000mi on it since then and so far so good! He told me, that the seal really just kinda slides in place.
He also explained to me, that air-cooled VW engines run on relativly low oil pressure, when compared to other engines, so even a slight drop in oil presure will cause the light to come on.
Q: Automatic choke on a 1972 Super Beetle?
I have a 1972 VW Super Beetle...and have been reading John Muir's book How to Keep your Volkswagen Alive. I noticed his part on automatic chokes. He refuses to tell how to adjust them, and only tells how to disarm them. I went ahead and disarmed mine, since I'm pretty sure it is out of adjustment, since it hasn't been touched in years. Will this cause any real harm to my motor? The car is a weekend driver, so it doesn't get that many miles on it.
Yes, when I disarmed it, I pulled the power cord to it and opened the butterfly valve up on it all the way.
Not to sound arguementative, but I didn't see the reference to the Changes and New Ideas section of the book after his sermon. And once the engine is warm you don't have to give it any gas at all-it idles normally.
A: When you say you disarmed the choke, do you mean that you removed the power cable to the choke. If this is what you have done then effectively your choke will remain on, with a resultant poor performance, high fuel bills and will lead probable lead to other problems in the future.
If however you mean that you have forced the choke to remain off (i.e. the choke valve (top round disk) open) then you will do no damage to the car. All that will happen is it may be a bit harder to start on cold mornings and may run a bit jerkily until the car warms up (know many people who run without a choke on their car).
I do not quite understand by what you mean that you do not know how to adjust the choke. Essentially, all that is required is that it is in the closed position when fitted (not forced). As the resistance wire heats up, so the choke opens to a maximum. There is no in between adjustment. You must just make sure these two conditions are met.

Q: Is there such thing as an automatic stick shift pre-1998 VW beetle?
i found an 1972 Automatic stick shift Volkswagen Beetle and i was wondering if that was an original tranny ? becuase all bugs were manual
A: That was a semi automatic, no clutch but you still had to shift yourself.
It made a slow car even slower - I agree with the other poster, better to get a stick for that car.
